Captured Seasons

Sometimes, it feels like the stories from mythology mirror what’s happening in our world today. Take Demeter and her daughter Persephone, for example—they controlled the seasons in the myth, while we’re still out here trying to figure out how to control them ourselves. That idea inspired this assemblage. In the myth, it’s possible to change the seasons. In real life, though, not so much.

I started with a baby head mold and ended up making five heads. Four of them I decoupaged, each one representing a different season. They’re hanging from a chain inside an industrial wire cage. The cage sits on top of an old fan stand that I covered in scraps from my 1947 Rand McNally atlas. On top of it all is a painted wooden disk, five wooden skate wheels, and another baby head I decorated to represent Demeter. 17Hx7Wx7D
