Mom and miro

The Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona has the most complete collection of his work, and it's where I first really connected with his sculptures. Made from objects he picked up on his daily walks, they have this raw, bold simplicity that amazed me. Miró saw these objects as a way to link art and life, each one telling its own story. "Mom and Miró" is my own tribute to that idea—bringing together found objects and tying them to my own world.

I started by mounting a scribe onto a Mrs. Potts Sad Iron, then attached a small hand-held sieve with copper wire that I painted gold. I used a tiny tin desert cup, which I covered with gold leaf, as a halo. Inside the sieve, I placed bits of sea glass. Hanging from the sieve is a ball that I decoupaged with an old photo of my Mom. On the other end of the scribe, I stuck a small yellow-painted ball. All of this is surrounded by bed springs painted blue and red. Finally, I painted the Sad Iron black, with silver and gold highlights to add a bit of shine. 13.5Hx10Wx3D
