Not Going Back

The rallying cry from the last election, "We’re Not Going Back," inspires me. It’s a stark warning against the dark past—a past of racism, bigotry, inequality, and hate. This piece depicts that past as a soulless, lifeless monster. We must move forward.

My "Monster of the Past" started with a simple potted plant stand. On top, I added an old wooden kitchen tool with a forged iron tong. I had a local metal shop weld a screw onto the tong so I could attach it to the handle. For the arms, I draped iron horse bits over the handle. To represent people, I use marbles or ball bearings—this time, I scattered ball bearings around the base. 27Hx11Wx7D
