Saint Spanky

Religious iconography can be very ornate, in particular the eastern Orthodox faith. I wanted to create a piece that showcased the outlandish ornateness juxtaposed with the absurd.

I started with an old rusty cast iron door hinge as my altar. A wooden disk became the altar centerpiece which I covered in gold leaf and costume jewelry. I found Spanky at an antique shop near Staunton Virginia and knew immediately he would fit perfectly on the altar. 7Hx3.5Wx2.5D
